“I never wanted to be your whole life…just your favourite slice of it.” Pizza kitchens are popping up in all of our favourite neighbourhoods and yet you’ll still wait an hour for a table on a Friday night. Foodies, daters, friend or faux we can all agree that pizza is the perfect food. It’s a date night staple that has been perfected in yyc-pair it with some fine wine and you’ll have a home run. Here are a few favourite pizza restaurants in Calgary-good luck deciding on best crust.

Cibo

Cibo (pronounced chee-boh) simply means food and it’s quite clearly their passion.  Cibo’s pizza is cooked in its giant gas-fired forno bravo oven (if sitting by the kitchen is an option-it makes for a great date night spot). Try the savoury wild boar bacon pizza which is stacked with wild boar bacon, salami, sausage, pancetta, tomato and mozzarella or get cray with the pear and gorgonzola pizza ganished with walnuts and honey. While you wait for your za order a few Scondellina, small tapas served with toasted crustinis. Our recommendation is to order 3 -the ricotta, roasted eggplant puree (better than hummus), and bruscetta. Pop open a bottle of Malbec and *boom* It’s Date Night…handled.

Famoso

We love Famoso – a small casual spot serving up authentic Neapolitan pizza in a warm energetic atmosphere. Order the Capriccios pizza – which is stacked with Italian ham, roasted mushrooms, artichoke hearts, olives and cheese.  Stop in and rekindle your Italian romance -they have a gelato bar too if you are just hankering something sweet. Our pick-the Ferrero Rocher gelato, yum, yum and yum!

LDV Pizza Bar

A truly Euro/ Italian inspired setting, LDV is a hidden gem in Bridgeland’s little Italy. Stop by and enjoy daily specials, a venti beer selection, wine and pizzas fired up in the wood burning over-the authentic way. It’s casual eats, a laid back cozy environment and some true Italian hospitality. LDV takes reservations and is a great venue for groups and couples alike.

Posto Pizzeria and Bar

Posto is the new kid on 8th street but there’s nothing amateur about the place. Posto is a lively little kitchen beside Bonterra (its sister is Cibo and it seems they are sharing crust recipes…we’re certainly not complaining). I know we’re talking pizza but Posto’s menu is refreshing and seeemingly endless on the options. I tried the tuna meatballs and beef crudo, like beef tartare, to accompany the prusciutto with fiore de latte and arugula pizza and the chicken with almond pesto, red pepper and goat cheese pizza. I’ll be back- I had my eye on a charcutterie board from heaven.

Ristorante Pulcinella

In the heart of Kensington, Pulcinella is an original to the Calgary pizza scene. Executive Chef Domenic’s dream was to continue his parent’s legacy and bring unique and incredibly authentic Italian dining to Calgarians. Ristorante Pulcinella is one of the few APN (Associazione Pizzaioli Napolitani) certified pizzerias in the world. Certainly not your classical North American pizza, it’s different, but definitely delicious. We love that they take reservations and can accomodate large parties! So, date night out with your special someone, the family or all your friends-Pulcinella’s wood fired pizza will be an experience you wont soon forget. They walk the walk.

Una Pizza + Wine Bar

My heart skips a beat at the very mention of Una’s prosciutto pizza. Una’s crust is an absolute masterpiece. They offer a daily pizza creation along with the staples-ask for the truffle honey oil for dipping, drizzling or pouring all over your body. Una’s menu is small but has the perfect variety of small bites. The meatballs are amaze-balls and the prusciutto wrapped dates with goat cheese can be ordered in singles and are like little drops of heaven. Opt for the Kale Caesar salad and you’ll be forever hooked.

Una doesn’t take reservations but they do update their twitter profile based on wait times. Stop by and put your name down and they’ll call you when a table is ready. Mosey down to National or Brava for a few bevvies to ease into your date night. Or-order your pizza for take out and make it a date night at home, just you and your pizza, oh yeah…and your date.

Without Papers Pizza

Without Papers is a friendly neighbourhood pizza kitchen in Inglewood. They specialize in hand tossed Neapolitan pies. These have a perfect, thin and crunchy crust. The atmosphere is cool and laid back and they play old school movies projected onto a brick wall- I like little details like that. You can’t go wrong ordering  ‘The Hutch’ or ‘The Hawaiian 5-0’, loaded with classic toppings. I love the margarita here too, simple goodness-WOPs sauce is tangy and rustic and the mozzarella is rich and full of flavour. They don’t take resos for dinner but it’s worth the wait. Grab a glass of wine and drool over your strategy.
