While we’ll be here to nag you (it’s for your own good) to get out and play to keep the relationship spicy, there certainly is a time for a cozy date night at home. We are lucky to have some pretty awesome specialty markets in Calgary. You can stop by and grab something ready to heat up or pick up a few fresh ingredients to throw together a simple home cooked dinner (cooking together is a great way to bond). Light some candles, get cozy and enjoy each other. The only fight to be had is over the movie pick. Here are a few of our favourite Calgary specialty markets.
Bite Groceteria and Café
Bite aspires to bring products from all across the globe to Calgary. They bring unique flavours, producers and products together to bring some unique charm to Inglewood shoppers. Shop the market or hit the deli for some perfectly prepared entrees to take and bake at home. I wouldn’t skip the dessert counter here… cakes, tarts, brownies and little one bite treats, this is an absolute must.
Community Natural Foods
You can feel good about what you eat at Community. They have a passion for local, organic, healthy food and will have you channeling your inner locavore. Gluten free, dairy free, paleo, vegan..they’ve got your back. You can get a pizza to go from the market made on gluten free crust and pick up a few things for a home made brunch for the morning. Efficient.
CRMR at Home
Visit the CRMR at home market on 17th Ave to find family-sized meals, or dinners perfect for two, to bake at home or pick up some specialty crackers, cheese and spreads to go with a bottle of vino (or two). If you stop by the market in the afternoon you can enjoy their daily soup and sandwich special to warm you up!
Lina’s Italian Market
If you haven’t discovered Lina’s yet, you’re welcome. This authentic Italian market is the real deal. There is nothing fancy about it, but if it’s Italian-they’ve got it. Stop in for lunch and stock the fridge for some home cooked Italian dinner- don’t forget the canolis.
The Main Dish
The Main Dish values bringing healthy, fresh food from their kitchen to your table. Salads, Burger patties, turkey, chicken breasts, quinoa, cauliflower gratin…the pickiest of palates can be pleased at The Main Dish. Fellas-want to be a super hero, swing by on the way home so you and your lady can relax together. It’s dinner…handled.
Perched at the top of 17th Ave (just above Crowchild) this quaint little market has a lot to offer. Market 17 stocks local, organic food with an emphasis on healthy take-a-ways. I can’t get to my car before finishing one of their house baked cookies, they are the legit.
While you’re at Market 17 you should stop by J. Webb Wine Merchants- Calgary’s oldest specialty wine shop. They’ll set you up with some great vino to go with your home cooked dinner. You better get a few bottles, it’s going to be a long winter.
Mercato is just pure goodness. The pasta to go kits bring a little taste of Italy to your home-as if little Italian grandmothers were rolling them all day just for you (made with love). Mercato has a fabulous butcher as well as perfectly prepared deli items and market fresh organic veggies. Mercato does the work, you get all the credit.
Sunterra’s market has the best variety in Calgary. You can get anything from BBQ beef meatballs, maple roasted yams, honey ham, ribs, cajun salmon and an endless assortment of accompaniments. They make it fool proof by even offering a pre packaged (even pre-bagged) dinner kit for two that includes dessert. You can find the same convenience with their burger kits, one bag with everything you need for the ultimate burger feast. Bonus-Sunterra almost always has delicious sample stations-because they know you are already hungry!
