“Meat to Please You,” is a carnivorous motto for Calgary’s Avenue Deli promoting exactly that. Deliciously sliced, cured and spiced, smoked meat is what this small sandwich joint is all about, serving smoked meat that transcends it’s motto. This Marda Loop gem knows how to pack a sandwich that could rival even some of the best in Montreal. The place is small, consisting of five booths opposite a central counter and sandwich prep area. The menu is simple and well executed specializing in Traditional Smoked Meat choices while still offering similarly tasty items such as Nathan’s Famous All Beef Hot Dogs and a few other sandwich alternatives. Choose between seven different types of mustard for your smoked meat sandwich and wash it all down with one of their real milkshakes. Avenue Deli is owned by the same owners as Belmont Diner, Myher’s Deli and Galaxie Diner – all popular establishments, so they must be doing something right.
Gruman’s Catering and Delicatessen
More smoked meat! But it doesn’t end there. Grumans is a Montreal-style Jewish deli that has brought authentic chopped chicken liver, slow-roasted brisket and blintzes to the Beltline. Focused on breakfast and lunch, as well as catering for downtown and Beltline clients, Grumans boasts an extensive menu encompassing more than just your typical breakfast and lunch orders. Serving up steaming plates of French toast or stuffed omelettes made to your specifications for breakfast and an array of sandwiches and burgers, as well as “nosh” items such as lox and knishes for lunch.
Grumans is light and cheery but looks like a lunchroom that’s been here for decades even though this central location has only been open since 2012.
Kickers Smoked Meat and Deli
Two words: SMOKED MEAT. Choose between Traditional Montreal Smoked Meat sandwiches, Canadian favourites such as B.C.L.Ts and clubs, Grilled Canadian Presses served on Sour Dough bread or even $12 Platters that include items like smoked salmon, pickles, capers, coleslaw, smoked meat and more smoked meat! Kickers has a warm and friendly ambiance highlighted by a vaulted ceiling, vintage chandelier, feature brick wall and the world of local artist Marcus Fryia. If you’d need them to come to you, they can make it happen with their awesome catering options. Pair your smoked meat sandwich with a cold MTL lager or indulge in an order of poutine made with authentic Quebec cheese curds on top of french fries from Kicker’s guiltless…I mean greaseless fryer. If you’re looking for a truly Canadian lunch, this is your destination. Stop by Kicker’s en route to the Flames game to pre-game with some good eats.
Lina’s Italian Market
Veering away from the Montreal Smoked Meat Delis and into the authentic Italian ones, Lina’s Market is warm, friendly and very Italian. It’s a packed grocery store, with tiers of specialty Italian goods and products, complete with a full Deli section, in-store bakery and in-store cafeteria, complete with espresso bar, salad bar, hot & cold lunches and dessert bar. Grab a tray and choose between Grandma style pizzas, meaty sub sandwiches with roasted peppers, egg plant and Italian cheeses like provolone and meats like mortadella, capicola, prosciutto and spicy salami. Dish up tomato, bocconcini salads and pair it with a cappuccino or scoop of gelato or even better; buy a few dishes and share them. The likeliness of food envy is quite high when you’re choosing between items on this menu. Regardless of what you choose, if it’s made fresh at Lina’s you’re not likely to be disappointed. If you like what you eat you even have the option of purchasing the ingredients and then re-creating it at home.
Myher’s Deli is Avenue Deli’s baby sister. Same owner, same type of menu, same delicious flavour and execution, same variety of mustards; all packed into a different – smaller – central location.
