Round up your girls – it’s girls night out! If you and your friends are looking for a fun, vibrant spot to grab colourful cocktails and delicious food, look no further than Bar Sofia! Located at The Queen’s Marquee on Lower Water Street, this Latin-inspired restaurant hosts the best vibes for a great night out.
To amp up your night even more, they are now hosting weekly DJ nights every Friday and Saturday so you can keep the party going!
We stopped by for a visit to check out some items on their menu and experience their live DJ nights! (Spoiler… we had a blast!)
Atmosphere
If you haven’t checked out Bar Sofia since it’s re-opening, you need to add it to the top of your list! This place has stunning decor and fun pink hues all throughout the restaurant. It is so pretty, you will want to take photos of everything!
Stop by on Fridays or Saturdays at 10pm for their weekly DJ nights to keep the good vibes rolling late night!
Cocktails
El Diablito: lunazul tequila, orange liqueur, mango, lime, chile de árbol, tajín rim
El Corazon: lunazul tequila, mezcal, lime, strawberry, balsamic, chile de árbol, sweet + salty rim
La Palma: lunazul tequila blanco, orange liqueur, fresh pineapple juice, lime, hibiscus salt rim
Nahual: lunazul tequila reposado, koch mezcal, lemon, tepache, soda
Bar Sofia is known for their aesthetic looking cocktails (Did you know they offer some drinks made in a whole coconut or pineapple?!) and they definitely did not disappoint! Our top picks are the El Corazon and El Diablito, both are a delicious variation of a margarita but so tasty.
The El Corazon is the perfect combination of sweet and spicy, making a very flavourful cocktail experience!
Appetizers
Adobo Marinated Salmon Tostada: Smashed avocado, ancho crema, salsa verde, crispy onions and adobo salmon.
Anne’s Bravas Brussels Sprouts: Roasted brussels sprouts topped with carrots, jalapeños, radish and cilantro.
We were very impressed with both appetizers we tried! Both dishes were packed FULL of flavours with just the right amount of spice. If we had to choose a favourite, the brussels sprouts truly blew me away! This is not your typical veggie dish… they were crispy, spicy, salty with a little kick of citrus. This is a must try during your visit!
Mains
Crispy Cod Tacos: Crispy breaded cod, celery root slaw, ancho crema, passion fruit pico de gallo
Carnitas Soft Tacos: pork belly + shoulder, leche de tigre, citrus crema, pico de gallo
For mains we decided to try some of their tacos. You could really taste the freshness of the ingredients in each dish! The Crispy Cod Tacos had to be our favourite. The fish gave such a nice crunch and paired well with the sweetness from the passion fruit pico de gallo! Each dish comes with two tacos with the option of adding a third for an extra charge.
Dessert
Churros: three pieces, dulche de leche, spiced dark chocolate dip
Paletas: strawberry + guava
Bar Sofia may have a limited dessert menu, but all three desserts are truly crafted with care. We decided on the classic churros and paletas which really surprised us! The churros were crispy and surgary on the outside and warm and chewy on the inside making it pair beautifully with the chocolate dip. Paletas is a Mexican-style ice pop made with fresh fruit that ended our meal perfectly. It may be small, but the freshness of the fruit and sprinkle of tajin made this one of our new favourite desserts!
Overall, Bar Sofia serves up flavourful dishes, stunning cocktails and amazing vibes which make it a great spot for a night out in Downtown Halifax!
