We’re sitting down (virtually) with some amazing Canadians who are dishing on all things datenight. From their own first date stories, to dating pet peeves, a look into their businesses, advice, and more!

Who they are

Meet Emma and Andrew Trousdale,  the owners and hosts at Foret Cabins in Muskoka. They met 20 years ago backpacking through SE Asia and fell madly in love. 7 years later, after going home to their lives in their respective countries, they reconnected, moved continents, got married, had babies, got a cat and dog, and eventually opened Foret Cabins!

“After living in Toronto for 10 years, we began to yearn for our next adventure, and the idea for Foret Cabins was born.”

Emma & Andrew Trousdale

E: I am a singer/songwriter and mother of two girls. Recently, my husband and I sold our house in Toronto and moved to cottage country to work on opening our off-grid eco cabins in the forest project.

Let’s talk love languages, what’s yours?

E: Quality Time

About first dates…

E: Dating? What’s that? After 10 years of marriage and two kids, dating seems like a distant memory, lol.

Andrew and I met backpacking in Thailand, so our first date was jumping on a dirt bike and traveling around Cambodia for 6 weeks… I’d say that still tops my list of ideal first dates. 🙂

What are your favourite local date spots?

E: Foret Cabins of course. 🙂

Not every date is good…

E: If I’d have known then what I know now, I probably wouldn’t have wasted my time on so many futile dates, but I’m a firm believer that we learn something from every experience.

My biggest red flag is someone who talks about themselves more than they ask about you.

Business with your partner

E: Luckily, Andrew and I have very different strengths, so the things I hate doing are the things he’s good at (I’m looking at you, taxes). He also works full time so the day-to-day operation of the cabin is mostly me.

I think if we were on top of each other working every day it wouldn’t work as well as it does. We certainly can butt heads about things from time to time, but ultimately it’s nice to have a shared goal and vision with your partner.

Let’s share some #datenight advice for our readers

E: My favourite dates are simple. Its not about being flashy, its about finding a space/experience that can really let you get to know each other in a comfortable and honest way.

Going for a walk, grabbing a coffee and sitting in the park, or going skating – Toronto has no shortage of amazing outdoor spaces to enjoy while getting to know someone new.
