Keep those good vibes flowing all Summer long
If you are anything like us, you’ve been savouring every last moment of Summer. You’ve brought your whole squad down to Hotel Arts for that poolside lounging life, your liver has suffered one too many times, and you’ve committed to sweat sessions to keep that beach body in tact.
Sadly, the last month of Summer is upon us. But have no fear, this month has so much going on from music to festivals, to food and unique events like a Tiki-inspired rooftop party, you’ll want to fight the FOMO and hang on to every memory you can. Your couch won’t miss you.
1. Calgary International Bluesfest
July 31st - August 6th
Celebrate the 13th annual Calgary International Blues Festival from July 31st to August 6th. This is a full week of Blues workshops, concerts, and special events happening across the city. From August 3rd to 6th, there will be non-stop Blues music playing on the main stage at Shaw Millennium Park. Also expect to see a colourful arts market, festival souvenirs, and delicious food truck eats.
2. Market on Stephen Ave
August 1st, 15th, 22nd & 29th from 11am - 5pm
It’s baaaaacckk, YYC! The Market on Stephen Ave is back bigger and better than ever with three more blocks for you to explore this year. Join them every second Tuesday until the finale on September 5th for a plethora of vendors including fresh fruits, spices, fashion, art, and jewellery. See you on the “Walk.”
3. Music in the Plaza
Wednesday evenings until August 30th from 6pm - 8pm
Heritage Town Square, 1900 Heritage Dr SW
Celebrate Canada’s 150th with Heritage Park. They’ll be hosting an all Canadian lineup of talent in the Heritage Town Square every Wednesday evening in August. The series will be free for guests and promises a diverse range of musical styles. This show goes rain or shine so grab your date and a blanket and get ready to enjoy two hours of live music from some of Canada’s best acts.
4. Movies at the Meadows
August 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd; Gates open at 730pm

Every Wednesday night until August 23, Spruce Meadows will be screening movies on an outdoor screen. Bring a blanket and your date and get ready to cuddle up under the stars with popcorn and movie treats while you enjoy a lineup of favourites like Beauty and the Beast, Back to the Future, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Pre-release. Movies are $20/carload at the gate or $15/carload if purchased in advance online.
5. Calgary Fringe Festival
August 4th - August 12th at Various Times
This year’s Fringe Festival is back with shows to suit all theatrical preferences. With more than 40 different offerings and most happening in Inglewood, you can bring your date out to the ‘hood and make a full day trip out of it. This year’s shows include a clown performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a Legally Blonde musical, a late night cabaret, and more.
6. Inglewood Sunfest
August 5th from 11am - 6pm
Bring your date to the heart of Inglewood on Saturday, August 5th and get ready to seize the Sunfest. With activities ranging from live music, street performers, patios, and over 200 vendors, there's bound to be something for everyone to enjoy. Vendors range from artisan crafts to imported wares and community organizations.
7. The Plunge
August 5-7th, 12-13th, 19-20th, 26-27th from 11 am - 6 pm
WinSport, 88 Canada Olympic Road SW
The Plunge returns to WinSport this summer. Slip and slide down this 810-foot, three-lane water slide to cool off this August. Perfect all day entertainment for the whole family, you can slide all you want for two hours with minimal wait times in long lines. Get a little sporty and bring along a date to race down this giant slide.
8. Tiki Island Night Party
August 6th from 9pm - 2am
National on 8th, 225 8 Ave SW
Join National on 8th for August long weekend at their massive rooftop party. They’ll have island cocktails from Ricardo’s Hideaway for you to sip on while you groove to a mix of club and island hits from Gummi, Drew Atlas, and Erwin.
9. Heritage Day Festival
August 7th from 12pm - 6pm
Olympic Plaza, 228 8 Ave SE
This year marks the 40th annual Heritage Day Festival in YYC. Celebrate the day by heading to Olympic Plaza to enjoy a day of multicultural performances, ethnic foods, unique handicrafts, face painting, and other activities.
10. Trivia Night: Sex and the City
August 8th from 7pm - 9pm

Tuesday’s are no longer the Wurst day of the week. On Tuesday August 8th, grab your best girl friends, throw on your favourite pair of Jimmy Choo’s and come sip on a cosmo at WURST for Trivia Night: Sex and the City 2.0 edition. We are bringing NYC to YYC and can’t wait for you to join us.
11. EV Long Table Dinner

Summer lovin’ on George C. King Bridge. On Wednesday, August 9th, gather your besties, dress up in your Summer’s best, and celebrate the season with a gorgeous long table dinner presented by Mealshare. With live entertainment from an acoustic artist, a three piece band and solo musicians, along with breathtaking views of the city, this lush, long table dinner features a delightful menu crafted by dynamic food truck and chef collaborations. 12. Taste of Calgary

Mark your calendars and prepare to enjoy the city’s most appetizing festival. Walk hand-in-hand through Prince’s Island Park with your boo while you sample some tasty drinks and bites from the Calgary’s favourite food and beverage vendors. While you’re there, you can visit a variety of artisans, entrepreneurs, and interactive activities to add to the fun of the festival. Admission to the festival is free and includes a taste of Calgary's best musical acts.
13. Adults Only Night: Telus Spark
August 10th from 6pm - 10pm
Telus Spark, 220 St Georges Dr NE
Who said science can’t be fun? The second Thursday of every month Telus Spark hosts an adults-only night, so you can explore all that the science centre has to offer without having to deal with screaming kids and angry parents. The best part of it all, it has a bar on the second level, so you can drink a beer while keeping an ion the exhibits. This month’s theme explores all things money - from decadent twenty-first century lifestyles and ancient forms of cash to understanding what actually happened in the 2008 financial crisis.
14. Opera in the Village
August 10th-13th & 17th-20th

Channel your love for the local arts community and head to Opera in the Village for two weekends of performances. If you’re anything like us, one of our favourite productions coming to life this summer is Cinderella, an adaptation by Rob Herriot of two operas; Gioacchino Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon. This one-act opera is a perfect introduction to opera, and fun for the entire family. Plus, you’ll be sure to feel a little nostalgic after.
15. Summer Feast
August 11th to August 20th at Various Times
Introducing the inaugural Summer Feast, a 10-day foodie festival you’ll want to dig out your stretchy pants for. This new event is a ten-day prix fixe foodie affair that lets you enjoy some of the city’s top chef-driven restaurants on a budget. During the festival, take your pick of any three-course prix fixe menu for lunch or dinner, ranging from $15 - $35. Restaurants include The Nash, MARKET, Bridgette Bar, Anju, Shokunin, Foreign Concept and more.
16. Calgary Japanese Festival Omatsuri
August 12th from 11am - 6pm
Max Bell Centre, 1001 Barlow Tr SE
“Omatsuri” is the Japanese term for a “traditional festival”. On August 12th, make your way down to Max Bell Centre with your date to partake in and watch Japanese customs, presentations of traditional music, martial arts demonstrations, Japanese food kiosks and a sake tasting in their beer gardens.
17. Cardel Shawnee Market
August 12th from 5pm - 10pm
Shawnee Park, 330 Shawnee Blvd SW
Indulge your retail therapy with Cardel Market. On August 12th from 5pm to 10pm, Cardel Market will be setting up shop in the Shawnee Park Community. Browse through 40 different vendors, sample snacks from food trucks, and stick around to watch the GlobalFest fireworks light up the night sky over Fish Creek Park. Cardel is asking for a minimum $5 admission donation, all of which will go to support the Dreams Take Flight Foundation.
18. Calgary Dragon Boat Race and Festival
August 12th - 13th
North Glenmore Park, 7305 Crowchild Trail SW
One of the city’s premier sport festivals, the Calgary Dragon Boat Race & Festival attracts 1850+, 4000+ spectators and a lot of excitement as the community gets together to celebrate this Chinese tradition. This unforgettable experience is unlike no other as you watch dozens of bright Dragon boats sore down the Glenmore Reservoir. There will also be food trucks on site to satisfy that appetite of yours.
19. Peeled: Calgary Cocktail Festival
August 12th - August 14th at Various Times
In partnership with 14 of Calgary’s top cocktail venues, Peeled is bringing you a cocktail festival unlike anything you’ve seen in the city before. With the purchase of a Peeled passport, enjoy access to an exclusive list of cocktails at one of the city’s finest venues, along with interactive seminars, workshops, tastings, and masterclasses. With favourites like Proof, The Milk Tiger Lounge, Model Milk, Ricardo’s Hideaway and so much more on the list, you’ll want to come satisfy your cocktail curiosity.
20. Marda Gras Street Festival
August 13th from 10am - 5pm
On Sunday, August 13th, wander over to the streets of Marda Loop to celebrate the 33rd year of Marda Gras in the community. There will be live music, dance and cultural performances, vendors of all sorts, tasty treats, and activities for all ages from 10am - 5pm. Best of all, the festival is free to attend so if you’re anything like us, that’s basically already music to your ears.

Set to be a massive celebratory year for Globalfest with Canada’s 150th birthday and Globalfest’s 15th anniversary, this is an event not to be missed. In honour of Canada’s 150th, there will be 6 nights of fireworks with all invited teams being Canadian - expect to see displays from Ontario, the Prairies, Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and of course, the West. Take a stroll through the night market and come see what this year’s featured vendors have to offer.
22. YYC Taste the Trucks 7
August 18th - August 20th from 11am - 7pm
Riverwalk Plaza in East Village
It’s our party and we’ll eat as much as we want to! August 11th will mark the 6 year anniversary of the Food Truck Pilot Project in Calgary, and what better way to celebrate than throwing a Food Truck Birthday Party. With over 20 of Calgary’s best food trucks, live music from 10 at 10, giveaways, and cold beer from Village Brewery, this is a party you won’t soon forget.
23. Expo Latino 2017
August 18th - August 20th at Various Times

Expo Latino returns in 2017 to commemorate its 21st year. Expect performances from headliners like Oscar Lopez, The Merengue Queen Olga Tanon, Sonora Dinamita, and others. There will also be international and local artisans, dancers, and vendors. Come with your date and watch as Expo Latino transforms Prince’s Island Park into an epicentre of all things Latin.
24. Calgary Night Market
August 25th - August 26th from 5pm to 11pm
Southcentre Mall, 100 Anderson Rd SE
Don’t miss the finale of the Calgary Night Market at Southcentre on August 25th and 26th. Featuring a plethora of exciting local artisans, a lineup of incredible food trucks, live music and street performers, this event is great for the whole family. Admission is free and puppies are welcome, so feel free to bring Fido along for the adventure.
25. Calgary Pride Parade and Festival
August 25th - September 4th at Various Times
Bring out all the rainbow in your closet in celebration of diversity, equality, and the LGBTQ community. The annual Calgary Pride Festival happens from August 25th to September 4th and this year’s events calendar includes hikes, patio parties, a cross-stitching workshop, burlesque shows, and more. The parade is on September 3rd and sees upwards of 60,000 spectators through the heart of downtown celebrating the tremendous diversity of Calgary’s community.
26. Carifest 2017
August 26th at 9:30am
Millennium Park, 1220 9 Ave SW
Get your party pants on for this year’s Carifest. Starting at 9:30am in Olympic Plaza, they’ll be dancing their way down to Stephen Avenue and making their way to Shaw Millennium Park. The celebration continues all day long with Caribbean entertainment, eats and art.
27. Calgary Vegetarian Food Festival
August 26th from 10am - 5pm

Calling all Vegetarians: you’ll want to save the date for this one. The Calgary Vegetarian Food Festival happens on August 26th showcasing a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes from local vendors. They’ll also have interactive activities including Zumba, 3D food printing, and a Vegetarian recipe library.
28. Yoncé Yoga and Brunch
August 26th from 11am - 130pm

Okay yogis, now let’s get in formation. Believe in your inner Beyoncé and stretch out your muscles with some Yoncé Yoga. Introducing a Queen Bey themed yoga and brunch at Earl Grey Park. After an hour long flow class, you’ll be seriously thirsty for some lemonade, so stay for some brunch. 29. 4th Annual Paws in the Park YYC

Bring your pup to the 4th Annual Paws in the Park in support of Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS). Rain or shine, join in from 11am to 3pm for food trucks, a pet vendor market, on-site dog services, a photo booth, bounce house, and so many more activities. Don’t own a puppy? Make your way down anyways, just think of all the dogs to pet and selfies to take with your new furry friends.
30. Trivia Night: Pixar

31. Dining Through History: A Progressive Dinner

Get a taste of history at Heritage Park’s progressive dinner. You and your date will be in for a culinary history lesson with horse drawn carriage as your transportation while you travel to different destinations within the Park throughout dinner.
